Sun, Moon & Rising. Three ways into your chart.

When someone says “I’m a Leo,” they usually mean their Sun sign. A birth chart, also called a natal chart, places the sky at a particular time and place into a symbolic map. The Sun, Moon, and Rising are often called the “big three.” Each answers a different kind of question.

The central light

Sun sign

The zodiac sign occupied by the Sun when you were born.

In astrology: identity, purpose, and the qualities you express as you grow into yourself.

What gives me a sense of direction?

The inner weather

Moon sign

The zodiac sign occupied by the Moon when you were born.

In astrology: feelings, instinctive habits, and what helps you feel cared for and at home.

What helps me feel emotionally safe?

The eastern horizon

Rising sign

Also called the Ascendant: the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time and place. It is a point on the horizon, not a planet.

In astrology: your approach to new situations and the first impression you tend to make.

How do I begin meeting the world?

Read them together

For example, an Aries Sun, Cancer Moon, and Libra Rising might be read as a desire to act, a need for emotional security, and a considerate way of approaching people. The three placements can be different signs or share a sign. They are lenses for reflection, not rules about who you must be.

Why time and place matter

Earth’s rotation changes the sign on the eastern horizon. Rising therefore needs an accurate birth time and birthplace. Time also matters when the Sun or Moon is near a sign change. If you do not know your birth time, leave it blank in the linked calculator; it will show uncertainty instead of inventing a Rising sign.

More chart words: planets, houses, aspects & elements
Planets
Astrologers give each planet a symbolic role: Mercury for communication, Venus for affection and values, Mars for drive and action, Jupiter for growth, and Saturn for limits and responsibility. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto appear in many modern readings. The Sun and Moon are often grouped with them as chart placements, though they are not planets in astronomy.
Houses
Twelve divisions of a chart associated with areas of life, such as home, relationships, and work. Their arrangement depends on birth time, location, and the house system used.
Aspects
Angles between placements. For example, a conjunction puts two placements close together, while an opposition places them roughly 180 degrees apart. Astrologers interpret these as relationships between symbols.
Elements
Four traditional groups: fire suggests energy and initiative; earth suggests practicality and steadiness; air suggests ideas and exchange; water suggests feeling and imagination. Each group contains three signs.
Life Path
A number derived from a birth date in numerology. It belongs to a different symbolic tradition from astrology; it is not a planet, sign, or astronomical measurement.

This page calculates Sun, Moon, Rising, and a numerology Life Path. It does not calculate other planetary placements, houses, or aspects.

Magic Almanac uses the Western tropical zodiac: twelve equal divisions of the Sun’s apparent path, beginning at the March equinox. These signs share names with constellations but are not the same as today’s astronomical constellation boundaries. The positions are calculated; the meanings are traditional interpretations. Astrology is not scientifically established as a way to determine personality or predict events. Read NASA’s explanation of constellations and astrology.
